A few years ago, I was teaching a class to a group of early childhood educators, and one of the participants had just visited a local bookstore. On her desk sat a copy of It’s OK NOT To Share by Heather Shumaker. I was so intrigued by the title that I went out and bought my own copy immediately.
Good choice.
If you have read this blog for a while, you know I am a fan. Heather Shumaker is wise, funny, and so timely with her advice to parents and educators. So I am excited to share that she has a new book, It’s OK to Go UP the Slide!
All of us who read her first book while our young ones were in diapers and navigating preschool need some new advice on navigating the tricky issues our elementary-aged children are facing…and this is that book. Once again, Heather is not afraid to take on the difficult (sometimes controversial) topics, boiling down practical advice into short, easy-to-read chapters that fit the needs of busy families.
I was invited to read an early copy of her manuscript, and I can tell you that it is truly wonderful. There are so many excellent chapters…here is a small sample:
- Safety Second
- Recess is a Right
- It’s OK to Talk to Strangers
- Princesses are Powerful
- Deal with News Disasters
- Discipline Your Phone
So, if you are interested in her book, buy it now, and get these cool gifts: order a copy of before March 13, 2016 and receive free gifts (special edition one-hour podcast taking you behind the scenes plus a set of inspirational quotes for your fridge). Simply 1) buy the book before March 13, 2) send an email to saying where you bought it.
And, only for readers of this blog…WIN A COPY! Heather is offering a FREE COPY of her book! Enter to win your own free copy by leaving a comment below. I will randomly select one winner at midnight (PST) on March 7. Don’t forget to check back on the 8th to see if you are the winner!
Thank you, Heather!
Thank you for letting us know about this new book by the excellent Heather Shumaker – I heard her interview by Abby Bordner a couple of years ago and found her perspective both challenging and fascinating. Can’t wait to discover her next book (as yes, my kids have grown up!). Thanks again!
Can’t wait to read this book, and yours, as well when it comes out!
I have read her first book and loved it! I would love to read her newest book called, “It’s ok to go up the slide.” I would love to win this book. Thanks Emily.
Thank you for this amazing tip! I love the title already (I hear some many people say that to kids!) This is definitely on my list now.
I love this book already!
Looks like a great book! As an early childhood educator and parent, I’m looking forward to checking it out.

So excited to read your new book Heather!
I need to go find ‘It’s ok not to share’, my sister and I have had many discussions about it!
I lover Heather’s first book1
Emily, you continue to inspire me even though I have passed the parenting stage ( I guess…). I have forwarded many, many of your blogposts to my children who are now parents. They will all get a copy of “Its OK to Go up the Slide”. Thank you for your common sense!
Sincerely,
Frances Hill
Thank you, Frances!

I would love to read this book!
Really looking forward to this book! The first one challenged me and greatly improved the quality of my program π
Sound like a good read! The title intrigues meΰ₯€ I taught at a school where this was a playground rule but I now let my own children climb UP slides all they want!
I sure hope to win! I can’t wait to read this book!
I would love a copy of this book!
I would love to read that book, my son is always climbing up π
I would want one copy too! <3
oh yeah…always going up the slide….other preschool teachers disagree with me….
Yay! (Thanks for entering…just FYI, you can only enter once, so I will only count one of your comments. π Have a great day!)
Always go up…other teachers dissagre with me
Started a new job and lots of discussion last fall when I said “yes-please do go up the slide!”
Yay!!
It’s Ok NOT to Share changed my entire approach, for the better, but I find I need words for dealing with elementary school now. I am so happy to see this book does just that!
Any chance for a middle school or high school edition up next? π
I’d love a copy of this book. I’m frequently “that mom” at my son’s elementary school pushing for change to the “well, we’ve always done it this way…” type rules. It would be lovely to have some published support behind me…
I am sooo tired of being “that mom” and having people go in one breath from “I can’t believe you would let them do that” directly to “they are so mature.” I just want to scream sometimes that they are connected, this giving of responsibility and freedom and the maturity and confidence. I just heard about these books today and am so excited to see a book like this. I would love my own copy (maybe even two so I can loan one out as needed.
Would love to win this book!
I loved the first book and I’m so glad there is an elementary-age book coming out! Can’t wait to read it. Thanks for sharing.
I loved the first book and I’m looking forward to reading the second! Thanks for sharing!
I would LOVE a copy of the book! Thank you!
Would love to read the new book! Her first book definitely inspired me as a parent and as a professional working with young children!
This sounds great! I have been trying to stop the “stranger danger” crap for a while. I was terrified to talk to people out in public until about 13.
As a mom of a daughter studying early childhood education – and working in family ministry myself – this book will be a great addition to our resources. A free copy sure would be a blessing!
I want to read this book (and the other one, too)! My many years working with young children assures me that there must be a reason they are DRIVEN to go up the slide!
